Position Summary Information

Job Description

The general responsibility of this position is to perform software application development for objectives with either a broad or narrow scope that have impact at the University; uses advanced expertise to analyze, plan, design, develop, test, implement, document and maintain software projects that impact the University or system; work includes participation in all phases of an application development project in any environment from its inception as a business analysis problem to its completion as an operational computer application; collaborates with all levels of the organization to ensure successful project implementation.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Function as a data warehouse and analytics manager:
    • Responsible for current and future warehousing and analytics application administration and development
    • Build, develop, and maintain ETL functions, reporting systems, dashboards and performance metrics that support key business decisions, ensuring consistency and accuracy of data
    • Design and build technical processes to address business issues
    • Maintain and enhance the mapping of the physical tables and modeling administration
    • Responsible for additional data sources within the current warehouse and analytics structures
    • Develop and maintain the design and delivery of reports and insights that analyze business functions, key operations, and performance metrics.
  2. Arranges database and application backups and recovery procedures:
    • Coordinate the backup schedule and retention periods, reloads, and recoveries from backup systems in conjunction with Information Systems DBAs and infrastructure engineers
    • Develop procedures for application disaster recovery procedures or the reconstruction of lost or damaged data
    • Work as part of the Information Services Team to test and correct data inaccuracies that result from upgrades, patches, fixes or data entry error.
  3. Monitors system performance, assesses space utilization and growth, and recommends upgrades and enhancements to software and hardware to ensure optimal application performance.
  4. Researches, evaluates, tests, and installs application software; performs software conversions and migrations to new versions, patches, products, or platforms while preserving data integrity.
  5. While adhering to approved security policies, works with Information Technology professionals and users to develop and establish security procedures for controlling and monitoring user access and for establishing and maintaining user passwords, roles, and profiles for Information Systems applications.
  6. Builds, designs, maintains and modifies specialized software, utilities, and solutions:
    • Analyzes and resolves problems attributed to design or software applications
    • Ensures that coding is consistent with the system requirements/design and conforms to application procedures and standards
    • Meets with users or other members of Information Technology Services (ITS) to determine existing business processes, problems, objectives, and requirements in order to design or modify a system solution that will meet user needs
    • Provide general and detailed system and user documentation; provide training of appropriate personnel; update Help Ticket system
    • All aspects of developing or modifying specifications for the proposed business system, such as report layouts, screens, input documents, forms design, and physical file structure.

  7. Maintain server functionality at application level for high availability; support hardware/software updates as it impacts the application.
  8. As needed, function as liaison and office representative on committees and at meetings, both on and off campus, for the University, the State System of Higher Education, and professional associations related to technology.
  9. Maintains knowledge of latest technical advances by reviewing professional publications or participating in formal training programs, courses, and seminars, as the budget allows, in order to develop and design new programs and applications that fit the client’s needs.
  10. All other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree,
  • Proficiency in data warehousing tools and database systems (for example: Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server),
  • Background in database practice combined with hands-on experience in data warehousing and analytics technology,
  • Experience with Windows and Linux Server,
  • Strong skills for effective data analysis and reporting,
  • Strong background in software development and programming,
  • or any combination of equivalent experience and training.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with higher education information systems highly desirable.
