Position Summary Information

Job Description

The Controller reports to the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations.


Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Provide leadership to accounting staff giving direction and guidance to direct reports, delegating assignments, reviewing staff productivity, and mentoring staff to ensure high-quality accounting and financial reporting.
  2. Manages and coordinates the year-end closing process and the preparation of the institution’s annual financial statements including related footnotes MD&A and Single Audit OMB A-133.
  3. Acts as primary liaison with external independent auditors on annual financial report.
  4. Develops and executes the vision for the accounting function, identifying process improvements.
  5. Maintains thorough working knowledge of the institution’s primary financial management systems (Banner and SAP) to ensure staff have the required knowledge needed for their area of responsibility.
  6. Responsible for accurate and timely posting of transactions to the general ledger while ensuring fiscal integrity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and university policies and procedures.
  7. Reviews, maintains, and assists in developing effective internal control structures for all assigned functions.
  8. Coordinates institutional banking and investment activities with Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) treasury function, which includes both operating and restricted funds; also works with PASSHE personnel and system Controller on issues related to the annual financial audit and completion of the FINRPT.
  9. Collaborates with the Budget Office and other university offices in explaining account balances and variances from various accounting periods.
  10. Coordinates with payroll to ensure the timely and accurate posting of university payroll transactions.
  11. Streamlines chart of accounts to meet the needs of internal and external customers and various financial reporting requirements.
  12. Advises department heads regarding prudent accounting oversight of their cost centers.
  13. Responsible for providing financial expertise to special projects involving institution-wide initiatives.
  14. Advises the Associate Vice President for Financial Operations on financial, accounting, and auditing matters.
  15. Responsible for writing and maintaining documentation of university accounting policies and procedures.
  16. Recruits, trains, and retains qualified accounting staff while promoting diversity and quality customer service.
  17. Identifies and implements professional development opportunities for staff; trains staff on new accounting procedures and accounting system enhancements.
  18. Informs accounting staff on new directives from NACUBO and PASSHE and related accounting issues.
  19. Stays current and implements new pronouncements of accounting standards and other regulatory issues affecting accounting procedures, financial reporting, governmental funding, and audit issues.
  20. Deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional helpful and courteous manner.
  21. Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or other business-related discipline is required.
  • Licensure as an active Certified Public Accountant.
  • Seven or more years of professional accounting operations experience to include: General Ledger, Cash Management, Fixed Assets, Accounts Payable, and Financial Statement Preparation.
  • Three or more years of full charge supervisory experience, preferably in a higher education union environment.
  • Working knowledge of operational and financial reporting issues.
  • Must be self-motivated and a highly detailed oriented problem solver with the ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Must have an open and collaborative style of leadership that encourages teamwork and cooperation, and be a strong role model, manager, and coach.
  • Experience using a relational database such as SAP financial accounting system.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written skills and the ability to communicate comfortably with staff, students, colleagues, and external constituents.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, or a business-related field MBA.
  • Knowledge of non-profit/governmental fund accounting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of GASB/FASB financial reporting requirements is desired.
  • Prior experience in a higher education environment is desired.
  • Experience with Grants and Endowment Management preferred.
  • Experience using SAP information system is a plus.
