Position Summary Information

Job Description

The Network Administrator is responsible for designing, organizing, modifying, installing, and supporting campus-wide network systems. This position designs, installs and manages LANs, WANs, Internet and Intranet systems, Wi-Fi network and network segmentation.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Under direction of the Network Engineer, provides installation, support and network monitoring for all LAN/WAN data network, firewalls, services and maintenance for the University’s main campus and Porreco Campus in Erie, maintaining a high level of systems availability and optimization based on analysis of reports and monitoring tools. Evaluates network performance issues including availability, utilization, throughput and latency.
  • Provides monitoring and operational and technical support for both employee and student-owned computer connections to the University’s network including operating systems and other applications required for successful connectivity. Perform connectivity troubleshooting, resolution and support to include employees and both residential and non-residential students.
  • Responsible for support, configuration, installation, and programming for all network electronics. Responsible for service and maintenance to ensure a high level of systems availability and optimization.
  • Configure, operate and maintain Cisco Wireless Controllers and wireless access points for both University and Residence Hall networks. Provide recommendations for optimizing Wi-Fi network resources.
  • Manage, configure, troubleshoot and resolve network access including user authentication, vulnerability, assessment and remediation. Make recommendations and provide training and assistance as necessary.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software problems on any voice, video and data equipment serving the students in the residence halls. Provide effective troubleshooting to resolve connectivity issues.
  • Monitors and makes recommendations to optimize student network performance. Functions as a data and network support resource to Help Desk personnel.
  • Manage University Cable TV (CATV) system. Interface with CATV vendor on issues requiring their attention and support.
  • Develop and maintain diagrams and documentation on campus network configurations, router configurations and Wi-Fi system configurations. Document procedures, guidelines, user guides and web pages to support and enhance employee and student use of technology resources.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in IT, computer science or related field of study with at least 3 years of position related experience.
  • In-depth working knowledge of TCP/IP, routing and switching and Wi-Fi networks
  • Experience with Cisco network products a must.
  • Previous experience supporting Wi-Fi networks.
  • Strong understanding of computer network infrastructure.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to implement, administer, and troubleshoot network infrastructure devices.
  • Ability to perform deep packet analysis using network tools (Sniffer/Wireshark)
  • Ability to quickly learn technologies and products using documentation and internet resources.
  • Ability to work with all levels of IT staff inside and outside the organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, written and oral communication skills required
  • Dependable and flexible when necessary.
  • or any combination of equivalent experience and training will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Cisco Network certifications a plus.
  • Experience with Aruba, Palo Alto and VoIP technologies preferred.
  • Experience in an academic environment desirable
Specific Duties
